BIOGRAPHY

Lolkje van der Kooi was born in 1961. Together with six older sisters and two younger brothers she grew up on a farm in Oostermeer in the province of Friesland. These surroundings tranquil and unspoilt as they were engendered a lifelong fascination for nature.
Her love of drawing, having been evident from childhood, brought her to Kampen Academy of Arts. It was there that she became captivated by the graphic arts and by calligraphy; drawing, however, remains her greatest passion. It is with the pencil with all its shades and contrasts that she feels totally at home, almost as if it were an extension of her fingers. The pencil and she have become one.
Nature for her is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. The underwater world in particular supplies her with many a subject, captured as tranquilly as possible without any action or background. All focus is on shape, skin, markings of the animal or plant.
From 1997 onwards Lolkje van der Kooi has lived, together with author/artist Machiel Braaksma and sons Skelte and Ynte in the former director’s dwelling of the dairy factory at Marrum.
Besides that, she teaches spatial drawing at the Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden, at the Department Communication and Multimedia Design.
